Scarlatti in Barcelona

Barry Ife
Speakers Abstract:

Anthologies and compilations of texts pose particular problems for the study of text transmission and editing. This lecture will compare and contrast two manuscript compilations- one poetic and one musical- to illustrate these problems and discuss their implications. The poetic source is a collection of late fifteenth-century song texts in the British Library (Add MS 10431) and the musical source is a collection of Scarlatti sonatas that has fairly recently come to light in Barcelona (BC M1964). How important is this latter source and how does it fit into the great Scarlatti jigsaw?
