ICONEA seminar: 'Howard Goodall's Story of Music': a critical examination

Speakers
Richard Dumbrill and Bruno de Florence
Speakers Abstract:

In a BBC series which began in January 2013, composer and commentator Howard Goodall presented his historical survey of Western music. A careful analysis of his choices and commentaries have not only displayed historical inaccuracies and misconstructs, but also deep-rooted ideological layers having more in common with the Victorian age than with modern Critical and Cultural Studies. Concentrating on Episode 1 titled “The Age of Discovery”, we shall endeavour to re-visit Goodall’s assertions, and to re-locate his arguments in their own specific contexts.
