Emily Coit (Worcester College, Oxford): '"His Larger Brain": Mrs. Humphry Ward and the Gender of Economics'

This paper reads Mary Ward's Marcella in order to contribute to the historicized understanding of its author's conservative politics, locating the novelist within a conversation about economic consumption that also includes Beatrice Webb and the economist Alfred Marshall.

Emily Coit is a lecturer at Worcester College, Oxford. She is working on a book about understandings of elitism and condescension, focusing on representations of liberal culture in the work of cosmopolitan American novelists from the Gilded Age.
