Formalism, Contract Law and the Market
John Gava,
Reader in Law, University of Adelaide, Australia; IALS Visiting Fellow
Is the market best served by contract law which is as clear and determinate as the common law allows or is it better served by judges developing contract law to reflect the expectations and behaviour of market players? In other words, is formalism in contract a help or hindrance to the market? |

US Immigration Reform: Towards Comprehensive Reform?
STEPHEN H LEGOMSKY, John S. Lehman University Professor, Washington University Law School, St Louis, USA. Stephen Legomsky is the main author of Immigration and Refugee Law and Policy (5th Edition published by Foundation Press in 2009), and has written widely on US and international law on migration and asylum.
Since 2005, the US Congress has been grappling with the reform of the US immigration system, without yet reaching a resolution. Many of the issues are familiar ones in Britain, including enhanced border control, the policy response to irregular migration, quotas for legal migration and the restriction of access to citizenship. This lecture will discuss the current issues that together make up ‘comprehensive immigration reform’ and the contemporary debates on those issues. Organised by the Migration and Law Network, with support from Laura Devine Solicitors and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. For information about the Migration and law Network, please contact the co-chairs: - Dr. Bernard Ryan, Law School, University of Kent, Canterbury CT27NS. Tel 01227 823310.
